Secondary Teaching in Mathematics & Science (STEMS) Graduate Program
STEMS is a 7-12 licensure program in Secondary Education that is 14 months in length, with a 30-hour program of studies. Highly qualified graduates in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, and computer science, with a GPA of at least 2.5, are eligible to apply. The program includes a living stipend and a one-year, paid internship in the Albuquerque Public School District.
Program by Semester
- Summer 1: After successfully completing the probationary pre-service coursework and practicum during the summer, interns are granted provisional licensure by the New Mexico Professional Education Department.
- Fall and Spring Field Experience: Interns are assigned in paired teacher-teams to full-time teaching positions in middle and high schools, while completing UNM coursework two evenings per week.
- Summer 2: Interns complete the remainder of their UNM coursework in the summer session following the school year.
Benefits
The program pays for 24 credit hours. Participants are responsible for paying for the other 6 credit hours. Resident graduate tuition for Summer 2007: 6 credits = $1255.80; Please note that the program does not pay for non-resident tuition.
Participants receive a stipend of at least $12,000, paid August – July.
Throughout the 14-month program interns receive comprehensive collegial and professional support from the Program Manager, Teacher Preparation Coaches, and University Faculty, all of whom have extensive classroom experience.
Application Process
The application period is from November to January. The deadline for the submission of applications is early in February. Eligible applicants are interviewed in late February. A new cohort begins each year the first week of June. Call the Program Manager to arrange for an advisement session.

Eligibility:
- Must have BA/BS degree in mathematics, computer science, biology, chemistry, geology, physics, or engineering.
- Must meet requirements of UNM Graduate School.
- A passing score or proof of registration on NMTA Basic Skills examination.
