MA in Elementary Education for Licensed Teachers

We believe the Master’s Degree in Elementary Education offers you an opportunity to construct your studies around your personal and professional goals toward becoming a transformative, reflective expert in the field of Teaching and Learning. Core academic experiences will include exploration of the following topics:

Whether you seek courses towards specific endorsements, or courses focused on the student of your own teaching, we believe this program can be made to fit your needs and the needs of the children and families you serve. We look forward to beginning this new journey together!

The program includes 15 core credit hours, 15 focused elective hours, and a 3-hour capstone experience. Through elective courses you can choose your own path in:

  • Social Studies
  • Mathematics
  • Technology
  • Teacher/Instructional Leadership
  • Environmental Education
  • Reading
  • Bilingual Education
  • Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

You may also choose a transcripted Concentration in Mathematics, Science and Educational Technology or Minor in Special Education.

Roadmap for Your Master’s Journey
  • Attend the Admissions Information Orientation
  • Meet with an Elementary Education Faculty Graduate Advisor
  • Meet Basic Requirements to apply: Graduate School & Program requirements including an overall GPA of 3.0
  • Hold a valid New Mexico Teaching License
  • Complete the Application Packet

      Elementary Education Application Deadlines
      Summer/Fall: March 30th
      Spring: October 30th
  • Application Reviewed by Admissions Faculty
  • Interview Conducted by Admissions Faculty
  • Receive admission notification from UNM College of Education
  • Attend Teacher Education Department Graduate School Orientation
  • Seek advisement every semester to confirm your path
  • Begin your Master’s Journey by taking graduate classes
  • Submit Program of Studies the semester prior to degree completion
  • Succesfully complete coursework, Master’s Seminar, and Master’s Exam/Thesis
  • Congratulations! You have reached your Destination!
