Alternative Licensure Programs

All teaching candidates (elementary education and secondary education) holding a baccalaureate degree must enter a licensure program as a graduate student. Students are accepted into the Elementary Education or Secondary Education Program at the same time they are admitted into Graduate Studies. Candidates seeking an alternative license must meet teaching field requirements and alternative licensure professional education requirements of the UNM state-approved program of studies. When they complete these requirements and state mandated testing or other requirements, they may apply for a Level IA license through the state of New Mexico Public Education Department. Completion of the alternative license requirements is then noted on candidate’s official transcripts. Candidates who successfully complete their licensure requirements may go on to complete the Masters degree core requirements and receive a Masters Degree in Elementary Education or Secondary Education, if they so desire.
